Set: Substitute Landorus

 Landorus @ Leftovers
Trait: Sand Force
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Naive Nature (+Spd, -SDef)
- Substitute
- Earthquake
- Smack Down
- Hidden Power [Ice]

This is a fairly anti-metagame set that I'm currently using. Landorus has pretty much always been a significant sand abuser, but most tend to be either physical stat boosting sets or the Choice Scarf variant. Since Landorus can force a lot of switches with its high speed and power (Earthquake hits 195 BP in sandstorm), it often receives opportunities to set up subs. From the safety of a Substitute, Landorus can proceed to take out many of its conventional counters and either sweep or allow a teammate to do so.

franky's team ran an earlier version of this set with Stone Edge over Smack Down. Although its power drop is noticeable, Smack Down allows Landorus to get through some of its usual counters. Smack Down literally hits opponents down to the ground, meaning switch-ins like Skarmory and Bronzong can be hit with Earthquake the next turn. Even the most defensive Skarmory is cleanly 2HKOed, meaning it'll be forced to switch out or risk fainting. Entry hazards can be paired with this set to take advantage of opposing switches. Earthquake is Landorus' main method of attacking, and is powerful enough to be threatening even outside of sandstorm. HP Ice rounds out the set by taking out Gliscor and other Landorus.

Substitute Landorus can be paired with specific teammates to make it even more threatening. It lures out and eliminates many of Excadrill's counters, meaning the two have excellent offensive synergy with each other. After their respective counters are taken out, Landorus and Excadrill can function as a potent sweeping duo on a sandstorm team.

  1. One of the best things about this set is how easy it is to get a Sub up. Bluffing a Scarf isn't difficult at all to do. From there you can throw up a Sub and proceed to take out your opponent's primary counter to Landorus, which is more than often their primary counter for Excadrill as well, As you mentioned, this makes them a very potent offensive duo.

  2. This makes me want to try a gravity team with Landorus. But that probably wouldn't work at all.

  3. I remember using this set and raping you with it. Smack down is an interesting idea I may try sometime.
